The BDIX/SCL NIX is a layer two Internet Exchange over Ethernet. All members connecting to NIX/BDIX are exchanging data via an Ethernet which is a layer two technology.
Each member is connected to BDIX/NIX with their own individual router. All routers on the Ethernet are allowed to peer by exchanging routing tables through the route server set up by BDIX/NIX using BGP.
A route server redistributes BGP routes received from its BGP clients to other clients according to policy. By peering with a route server, customers can avoid separate BGP sessions with all their peers and instead limit the number of sessions to one with each route server.
